Princess Mononoke Storyboard Book art book details : Princess Mononoke (, Mononoke Hime) is the 10th feature-length animated film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki and animated by Studio Ghibli for Tokuma Shoten, Nippon Television Network and Dentsu, and distributed by Toho. I loved all the underlying messages to care for our forests and animals. The basic plot that is relevant to this post is that the protagonist, Ashitaka. The movie takes place in a fantasty world based off of the historical Muramachi Period in Japan. You may not understand Japanese, but Miyazaki’s beautiful sketches of the entire Princess Mononoke film is still a veritable work of art. One of the first anime movies that I have ever fallen in love with was Princess Mononoke. Princess Mononoke debuted in the United States in 1999 and is among the best known Studio Ghibli films over here along with Spirited Away and Kiki’s Delivery Service. Here he describes the sounds made by a tree canopy filled full of Kodama : ZAAAA~~~~~ZAAAA !!!!!! (above) Miyazaki-san documents his boards with detailed notes, including sound effects. I was maybe 10 or 11 when I first saw it and I was in the throws of a seriously bad fever. Later, I watched it for myself, wanting to see the rest because I was out sick for the second half. I watched it, completely baffled, in a Japanese ethics class. San says “Quit your dilly-dallying !” and Ashitaka “Start drawing !!”. Princess Mononoke holds a really special place in my heart just because of the circumstances I first saw it under. For me, the movie that defines my experience is Princess Mononoke. I love how Miyazaki-san finds time for self amusement/encouragement even during crazy production crunch times. *cue Princess Mononoke main theme, string version* (above) A pivotal scene in the film – Ashitaka meets San ( Princess Mononoke ) for the first time. (above right ) – a drawing that extends beyond the bounding box usually means the shot has a camera move, in this case a pan. Running at a whopping 134 minutes, Mononoke Hime is Ghibli’s lengthiest film ( I think ), and the whole animation was painstakingly storyboarded by Miyazaki-san himself, shot by shot. I remember watching it for the first time as a teenager and its incredibly visceral energy and stunning animation left me in a mild state of trauma, albeit in a good way. Princess Mononoke is my favourite Miyazaki/Ghibli film of all time.
